MICHAEL RUPERT BESLER
£2,850.00A set of eight 18th Century botanical hand coloured engravings by Michael Rupert Besler
Originating from the celebrated natural history compendiums of the German physician and botanist Michael Rupert Besler (1607–1661)—each plate depicts a unique alpine or exotic botanical specimen rising elegantly from an ornate, twin-handled classical urn. The collection features highly sought-after plates, including the grand 'Gentiana Insignis Alpina Floribus Aureis' and 'Amaranthus Mexicanus'. These works beautifully bridge the gap between scientific curiosity and exquisite artistic merit. Each specimen is presented with its delicate Latin classification hand-engraved across the body of the cartouche-style urns. Condition: Excellent antique condition. Beautiful, authentic toning to the paper consistent with 18th-century sheets. 20th Century frames.

PITH PORTRAITS
£395.00A charming and complete set of twelve 19th century Chinese pith paper paintings (historically referred to as "rice paper" paintings). Dating from the late Qing Dynasty (c. 1840–1880), these works were created in the studios of Canton (Guangzhou) specifically for the Western export market.
Each miniature leaf is painstakingly hand-painted in gouache, a medium that sits on the surface of the cellular pith to create a luminous, almost three-dimensional effect that remains remarkably bright over a century later.
The collection serves as a record of the period, featuring a diverse cast of characters including high-ranking officials, musicians and figures in courtly life.
The set is housed in the original Victorian-era cardboard presentation box with a glass lid.
The gouache pigments remain exceptionally vivid and saturated. As is characteristic of this fragile, organic medium, there are some natural fractures and peripheral chips to several of the pith sheets (as shown in the photographs), six of the twelve portraits have had repairs to the back . The original box shows typical age-related wear to the paper trim but remains structurally sound and provides excellent provenance.

SCOTTISH PORTRAIT
£295.0019th Century Scottish oil on board portrait of a gentleman in a white cravat.

SEPTIMUS SCOTT
£850.00Portrait of a Boy by Septimus Scott (1889–1965). A sensitively painted study of a young boy in a blue outfit or uniform, executed in oil on paper-laid canvas.
The work is inscribed with the word ‘rough’ above the artist’s signature, suggesting that it was an early concept or preparatory design for one of Scott’s celebrated commercial posters.
Painted in the same expressive, narrative style that characterises his advertising and illustration work, this piece offers a fascinating glimpse into the artist’s creative process. Although showing its age — with visible tears, creases, and areas of surface wear — the portrait retains exceptional charm and presence, embodying Scott’s draughtsmanship work.
