Paul-Élie Gernez (French, 1888–1948) | Church and Village in a French Landscape

A captivating oil on panel by Post-Impressionist painter, Paul-Élie Gernez. Known for his evocative depictions of Honfleur and the Normandy coast, Gernez’s focus here is on a village scene, dominated by a striking church spire and dome.

By allowing the warm grain of the wooden panel to peek through the paint layers in targeted areas, Gernez creates an inherent warmth, grounding the fleeting atmospheric conditions of the French climate. Signed faintly lower right.

Provenance: Private Collection; Purchased from Leighton Fine Art, Marlow, Buckinghamshire.

Condition: The painting is in very good condition. The frame has minor damage to the front corners, likely where the frame ties or reinforcing pins have slightly pushed through over timeThe reverse of the panel bears historical auction/inventory chalk marks.
