Paul-Élie Gernez (French, 1888–1948) 

Paul-Élie Gernez was a highly influential French painter, pastellist, and illustrator whose work bridged the gap between traditional Impressionism and the structured geometry of early Modernism.

Born in Valenciennes, Gernez studied at the École des Beaux-Arts before establishing himself as a vital figure in the 20th-century French art scene. In 1911, he moved to Honfleur, Normandy—a historic coastal town famed for inspiring Boudin and Monet. It was here that Gernez’s career flourished. He became the centerpiece of an elite artistic and literary circle, counting modern masters like Henri Matisse, Albert Marquet, Félix Vallotton, and Raoul Dufy among his close peers, collaborators, and admirers.

While heavily influenced by the structured geometric experiments of Cubism in the 1910s, Gernez ultimately rejected strict abstraction. By the mid-1920s, he returned to a more fluid, nature-focused figurative approach—a period of his career perfectly encapsulated by this painting. His mature style is celebrated for its architectural composition combined with a brilliant, highly sensitive understanding of light and rich, tactile texture.

Gernez exhibited widely to critical acclaim during his lifetime, most notably at the prestigious Salon des Indépendants and the Salon d’Automne in Paris. Today, his work remains highly sought after by international collectors and is represented in major public institutions worldwide, including the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, and the Musée Eugène Boudin in Honfleur.
