Brian Coole (Anglo-American, 1939–2017)
An exceptional and highly atmospheric marine oil painting on canvas by the celebrated historical marine artist Brian Coole (signed lower right). Housed in a heavily ornamented giltwood frame that complements its historic aesthetic, this piece depicts a majestic Three-Masted Clipper Ship in Rough Seas and dates to the Mid-to-Late 20th Century (executed in the 19th-century historical manner).
The composition captures the American clipper cutting through dramatic, white-crested waves under a heavily overcast, light-pierced sky. Flying the American Ensign from her stern, the vessel is rendered with technical precision, accurate historic rigging, and fine architectural detail that defined Coole’s highly sought-after ship portraits. The work balances the immense scale of the vessel against the turbulent forces of the open ocean, using a rich, moody palette to capture the drama of 19th-century seafaring.
Condition: The painting is offered in stable, ready-to-hang condition. There are a couple of small, historic repairs to the canvas where two minor tears have been professionally stabilized. A faint stretcher mark is visible along the outer edge where the canvas meets its wooden support structure. In our opinion, these minor age-related characteristics do not detract from the immense visual impact of the piece.
