An architectural set of four matching 18th Century continental columns, circa 1740–1780. Hand-carved from solid poplar, each column features a dramatic wrythen (spiral/barley twist) shaft intricately entwined with lush, trailing acanthus leaf motifs.

The timber displays a soft, tactile pale grain and a beautifully subtle bleached patina. Complete with turned capitals, stepped base rings, and top mounting pegs/tenons, columns of this form were historically crafted to support grand church altarpieces and retables, form corner pillars for elaborate tester beds (lit à colonnes), or feature within monumental interior panelling and armoire surrounds.

Condition: This set showcases authentic 18th-century construction, including multi-block section assembly and hand-fitted historic timber repairs typical of period joinery. Offered in good antique condition with age-appropriate character. Historic worm flight holes consistent with softwoods of this era (treated/historic). Structurally sound and solid overall. Features early timber joints, minor hairline shrinkage splits.
